Surprise Vacation and odd weight

So, to start, the reason there has been a two week absence on my blog is because Ali, Anisha and I took a "surprise" vacation to Alberta to visit our families (The surprise was on my mom who had no clue we were coming). It was a great time away and lots to tell:

1. An interesting thing occurred in Alberta, I weighed less. I was 340 when I left, and in Alberta I was 331. Since Alberta has a higher altitude, gravity is working a little less there, so I was lighter. Now, for those in science, you know my mass never changed. So what is my real mass then? Hmmm, I dunno... In any event, my weight has really fluctuated since we got back on Wednesday, so I averaged it out to 339 lbs.

2. We started our trip in Camrose with Ali's parents and had a great time there. We went garage sale shopping, took in a farmer's market, watched the F1 race (which was boring until the wicked crash near the end, then it got good), and I learned how to play two new board games (a horse racing game and some card game like Rummoli). We also went and visited Miquelon Lake provincial park to see their upgrades. I used to camp there with my folks when I was younger, so was good to go back and see the sights. Anisha loved playing in the sand at the beach and then wading into the shallow lake and getting soaked. lol. It was a great visit.Anisha playing with Buffy and Daxx at the off-leash park in Camrose

3. We then drove up to Sherwood Park and surprised my mom with a visit (Dad knew we were coming so as to make sure they stayed home). Monday was my Dad's 62nd B-Day, so it was nice to be there for that. On Monday, Ali got a haircut, then we went to the YMCA I used to work at to visit, and then we went to the Royal Alex Hospital so Ali could visit her old friends. In the later afternoon, we met up with Lindsey and Connor at Millenium Place in Sherwood Park to swim in their wave pool. Connor loved to jump off the edge into Lindsey's arms, but was hesitant to climb the huge train-water-fountain thing. Anisha eventually got a little braver and was all over that train-water-fountain thing, climbing in the tunnels and loving the spray water.

4. Tuesday brought forth something I have been waiting for for a while. I got to see The Dark Knight, finally. It was outstanding, mostly because of Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker. I didn't really like how they ended the movie with Two-Face, but Heath's Joker was phenomenal. 9.9999/10 (Doesn't get a 1o because of the Two-Face ending). It was well worth the wait and weight loss! (Get the joke? hehehe) After the movie, Ali, my dad and I took in Taste of Edmonton which was much better than it used to be. Favorite food: The Kung Pow Chicken and Dry Spicy Chicken from the new Chinese restaurant, Lingnan. Top notch. In the evening, Ali came up with a last minute activity and we went to see Body Worlds at the Telus World of Science. For those who don't know, it's a travelling world exhibition of preserved bodies and body parts that are prepared using a technique called plastination to reveal inner anatomical structures. They have everything from bodies in different poses (including a pregnant woman) to body slices, parts and organs. Although creepy at first, it was facinating to see the insides of us and how our bodies are made up.

5. We came home on Wednesday to a muggy Prince Albert and a lawn that desperately needs to be cut this weekend. Yesterday, Thursday, we took in Taste of Prince Albert. While not as large as Taste of Edmonton and with less variety, the portions were HUGE and Ali, Anisha and I had our fill.

That's about it here. Have a great weekend everyone

Trent, you are correct that gravitational force is weaker the higher up you go. I checked and the altitude of Prince Albert is 428m and the altitude of Edmonton is 668m. So Edmonton is higher by 243m. Gravity varies by a ratio of distance from the center of the earth squared. Now the radius of the earth is 6,400,000 metres so a 243 metre elevation change is not really significant. In fact you (or anyone) would be ~0.0075% lighter in Edmonton. So that works out to about 0.03 lbs (not 9 lbs, which is 300 times more than that).
To lose 9 lbs you would have to be 85km in air (at the cutoff to outer space, you would actually earn astronaut wings by being this high).

Sorry, as I science guy I just couldn't let that go.
