During
the short, and often undocumented reign of Kapar II (shortly after his father
Kapar went into hiding), the Trisconian government commissioned a new
organization to specialize in high level scientific research and development. Kapar
II had been introduced to a unique, brilliant scientist from Rhison who
specialized in using cybernetic technology to repair, and even replace,
biological systems. This scientist had managed to create a computerized
prototype that could be implanted into a brain to locate and repair
neurological damage. This scientist was Dr. Jacobas Nile.
Dr. Nile accepted the new commission
and began work on the first generation neurological implant to repair the
brains of different species in the galaxy. The first test subjects were Dr.
Nile’s own people: the Rhisonians. Soon after came the first Trisconian
patients to receive treatment. Within a few years, the commission had managed
to adapt the implant to over thirty different species with brain structures
similar to Trisconians and Rhisonians. On the second anniversary of the
creation of the commission, they adapted an acronym to represent not only their
scientific objective, but their drive for further development: INSECT -
Institution of Neurological Scientific Engineering and Cybernetic Technology.
The next two years saw a very rapid progression for
INSECT as Dr. Nile branched out his research in many diverse directions,
including armor, weaponry, and even transportation; both terrestrial and
spatial. To the casual observer, the fact that INSECT was developing technology
in many diverse fields showed that support for the program was widespread. The
truth was that Kapar II was pressuring Dr. Nile into developing as many new
programs as possible without offering the support needed to develop each new
program to its potential. The Trisconian propaganda machine displayed a
supportive, hard working INSECT commission to the viewing galaxy, while
whispers of Dr. Nile’s disgust and anger at the situation ran rampant through
the Trisconian Empire. During this time, a massive INSECT space station was
built in Triscon’s orbit to house the many new research and engineering areas
being developed.
A little over four years after the creation of
INSECT, Kapar II was ousted in a sudden coup and a new emperor emerged:
Quillien. His inaugural speech to the
Trisconian Empire held a number of promises of reform, including a new approach
with INSECT. Dr. Nile was cautiously optimistic for the new change and
graciously supported the new Emperor. Within a few weeks of his ascension as
the Emperor of Triscon, and in a shocking series of events, Quillien announced
the creation of a replacement group of scientists and engineers who, under his
direct control, were to replace the original INSECT team. The first wave of
this new team arrived on INSECT and quickly reorganized the entire facility to
focus on military research and development. Dr. Nile was furious, but was soon
pressured into accepting this new state of affairs and helped to create new
experimental technologies, specifically designed for the Trisconian military.
A couple of years after the hostile reorganization
of INSECT, Dr. Nile lashed back at Triscon: He launched a volley of Triscon’s
own weapons at a military installation on the planet in hopes of crippling the
fleet. The original crew of INSECT had rebelled against their replacements and
a violent battle took place on the station. Rumours of the battle on the
station were varied as there were tales told that ranged from the extremes of a
mass slaughter of the new commission members by decompression into space, to
executions, and even to fantastical tales of Dr. Nile himself launching weapons
from his own hands, as if he himself had become his own experiment in
Trisconian military research. Soon, many survivors of the battle on the INSECT
station, who were the replacement scientists, were sent back to Triscon on
transport crafts. Just as Triscon planned retaliation, the INSECT station broke
orbit.
Dr. Nile and his original team had
secretly restructured the station into a large space craft capable of military
level interstellar flight. The station left Trisconian space, actively pursued
by the Trisconian fleet. Just as the fleet closed in on INSECT, the ship
activated an experimental piece of technology that allowed it to create a
temporary artificial wormhole. To the shock of Quillien in the lead ship of his
fleet, the INSECT ship went through the wormhole and vanished from sight.
The independence of INSECT was soon
announced across the galaxy, but the Trisconian propaganda wheel spun a wicked
series of lies denouncing INSECT as a murderous, mad-scientist-led
organization. They released testimonies from former Triscon loyalists who were
scientists and engineers aboard INSECT that told of the horrors and terrible
experiments done by the original team.
Over the years, the legend of INSECT
grew. Those who knew the truth of Dr. Nile’s rebellion against Triscon and what
he fought for were his greatest supporters. INSECT became an independent
galactic agency, answering to no planetary government, not even the original
Planetary Council (which Quillien would disband soon enough). Scientists and
engineers from all over the galaxy would come to join INSECT, swearing an oath
to the mandate of INSECT and its programs. INSECT itself remained hidden
throughout the galaxy by creating temporary artificial wormholes and spatial
tunnels to allow it to keep on the move and away from Triscon’s radar.
As for Dr. Nile, he left INSECT a
few years into the new independency on a sudden personal mission that he
claimed would change the galaxy.
